Lithographies

Historical postcard of Cvikov from 1898. Besides the overall view of the town on the left there is the church of St. Elisabeth, the southern side of the market square with the town hall and the rocks of the Dutý kámen. On the right side is a picture of the gateway at Milštejn castle ruin.
On this lithography of Cvikov from 1901 in the centre there is an overall view of the town, to the right the gymnasium and to the left the former shooting-range and the extinct restaurant „Schweizerhaus“ on the southeastern slope of the Zelený vrch hill.
On this picture postcard of Cvikov in winter from 1899 the upper picture shows an overall view of the town and the former restaurant „Schweizerhaus“ on the slope of the Zelený vrch hill, in the lower picture there is the old town-hall still standing on at the corner of the market place.
On this lithographic postcard from the turn of the 19th and 20th century you see Cvikov with the dominant hill Klíč in the background. The smaller pictures show three important objects: the brewery at the foot of the Zelený vrch, the plague column originating from 1695 and the newly-built power station.
The four pictures of this lithographic postcard from the turn of the 19th and 20th century shows all the four sides of the market place of which the western one with the hotel „Zum Goldenen Löwen“ (upper right) at present no longer exists. The remainig pictures show the building of the former shooting-range (second picture upper right), the railway station (middle left) and the gymnasium (below).

This picture postcard shows Cvikov at the end of the 19th century.
On this picture postcard you see the town of Cvikov from the north as seen from the Trávnický vrch hill. The marked hill behind the town is the Ortel and to the right of it there are the lower hills in the surroundings of Sloup.
On this postcard from 1929 you see Cvikov from the Zelený vrch hill.
This picture postcard from 1919 shows the southeastern part of the town from the slope of the Zelený vrch hill. In the foreground there is the civic brewery with the two brewery ponds, to the right from which there is the newer Hoffmann's pond.which at present does not exist more.
On this picture postcard we see the southeastern part of the town at about 1957. In the centre of the picture there is the brewery, in the background to the right protrudes the tower of St. Elisabeth's church and on the horizon rises the Strážný vrch-hill.
This picture postcard shows Cvikov with the prominent cone of the Klíč hill as seen from the brewery ponds. Inmidst of the houses there is the second Niesner´s weaving mill standing on the place where at presentdays there is the open-air cinema. On the place of the garden in the foreground in the years before World War One had been built Hoffmann's pond.
This postcard from 1911 records the small houses on the northeastern periphery of the town with the Kalvárie (Calvary-hill) in the background. In the wood to the left you see the then newly built sanatorium for treating tuberculosis.
This picture postcard from the beginning of the 20th century shows Cvikov as seen from the tower of the brewery below the Zelený vrch hill. In the foreground there is the old road leading from Jablonné and on the horizon to the right the prominent Klíč hill.

The picture is dominated by the newly built house of the primary and secondary school (1907), the tower of St. Elisabeth church and the building of the the weaving-mill Serafin Liebisch Sons (on the right edge). In the foreground there is the road to Jablonné.

This picture postcard from 1907 shows the market place with the former town-hall und the seignorial house (right) built in 1739 for the demesne administration by Anna Maria Frances, grand duchess of Tuscany.
This picture postcard from 1900 shows a part of the market square with the town-hall, the pinnacle on its roof then still had a peaked roof. To the right you see a part of the former mansion in which since 1850 was the district court.
This picture postcard from the beginning of the 20th century shows the upper part of the market place, looking rather as a narrow street between the former seignorial house (left) and the hotel „Golden Lion“ (right). The Neorenaissance building of the hotel was together with some neighbouring houses demolished at the beginning of the eighties of the 20th century.
On this picture postcard you see the upper part of the market place between the seignorial house and the hotel „Golden Lion“. The small steeple on the town hall has already the lowered roof from 1919.
This picture postcard shows the monumental building of the hotel „Golden Lion“ which in former times was the dominant of the market place. After World War II it went to ruins and was 1981 demolished together with all the neighbouring houses.
This picture postcard shows the old houses on the western side of the market place with the monumental hotel „Golden Lion“. In october 1981, all these houses were demolished and only the last house on the right side, the former savings bank, remained.
On this picture postcard from closely before World War One the lower part of the market place with the monumental building of the present town council is shown. On the left side there is a part of the seignorial house which had been demolished in autumn 1945.
This picture postcard shows the eastern side of the market place with the monumental building of the town council, the former junior secondary school. In the ground floor of the last house on the right side there was the book-shop of Ferdinand Oppelt, the editor of most picture postcards of Cvikov.
This picture postcard shows the town square with the houses on its eastern side, among which the house of the mayoral office and of the secondary school are prominent.
On this picture postcard from the beginning of the 20th century you see the northeastern part of the market place with the building of the town council and the neighbouring Carl Pohl´s textile shop. In the foreground there is the former restaurant „Crown“ and on the right side the corner of the former seignorial house is seen.
This picture postcard shows the southweatern part of the market place with the town hall around of 1947. The place of the demolished seignorial house had already been adapted to a small park.
This interesting picture postcard from 1957 shows the western part of the town square with the attractive bulding of the now nonexistent hotel „Zum Goldenen Löwen“. In the small park on the place of the former manor house in those years stood a statue of J.V.Stalin.
On this picture postcard from 1914 the southwestern part of the market square is shown with the town-hall and the hotel „Zum Goldenen Löwen“ (Golden Lion) which, together with all of the neighbouring houses in 1981 had been demolished. In the park in front of the hotel there is the the first monument of J. V. Stalin in the former Tchechoslowak Republic built as soon as November 1948.

Streets and open areas

This picture postcard shows the upper part of the former main road to Svor. On the left you see the villa and the mechanical weaving-mill of Joseph Wenzel, in the lower cut there is the „Emperor Franz Joseph I - Jubilee sanatorium for tuberculous children“ from 1910 which in the thirties of the 20th century had been liberally enlarged to an „State sanatory for tuberculous children“.
This picture postcard from 1900 shows the former main road to Svor with the building of the gymnasium on the right side which till today survived almost in its original appearance.
This picture postcard shows the central part of the present-day Komenský-street which, however at present looks differently. The timbered house with the decorated Cross disappeared and also the two next houses on the right side of the street had been demolished.
On this picture postcard you see the lower part of the at present Komenského ulice called street which in the 30s of the 20th century already was not in accordance wit the growing demands of the traffic and, therefore, was radically widened and almost al the houses on the right side except the first two ones were demolished.
This picture postcard from 1914 shows the once tranquil Station road (now Ulice Čs. armády) leading to Sloup. In 1970 this road was immediately behind the last houses cut by the then newly-built bypass road, and the railroad from Svor in the foreground, originally opened September 1st, 1886, after 1973 had been liquidated.
On this picture postcard from 1914 there is the old road to the railway station leading to Sloup. Most of the houses are standing till present, only the nearest timbered house on the right side disappeared.
On this picture postcard from the second half of the twenties of the 20th century there is the former Station-street leading from the market place to the south. In the foreground you see the then „County house“, in the house behind of it (in the middle of the picture) there is the establisment of Rössler's manufacture of soda-water and vinegar which, among other things, also produced delicious mustard.
This picture postcard shows the old Kostelní ulice (Church lane) at the market place. Whereas the houses on the right side including the old town-hall are standing till the present days the whole left side was demolished in 1978 in the course of the broadening ot the street so that the town received another deep incision.
On this picture postcard from 1913 the former Zittau-street with the Art Nouveau-building of the former hotel „Reichshof“, which after World War Two was renamed to „Sever“ (North), are shown. Later this atractive building had been depreciated by an insensitive „modenization“, since the nineties of the 20th century it was out of use and had to wait till 2011 for its reconstruction.
This picture postcard from 1906-1907 shows one part of the formerly splendid Zittau-street. The restaurant „Deutsches Haus“, shown on the right side of the foreground, after the end of World War Two had been demolished, both the houses behind of it were insensitively reconstructed and the hotel „Reichshof“ at the end of the lane, nowadays named „Sever“ (=North) dilapidated until 2011 when it was reconstructed.
On this picture postcard two old streets of the town are shown. Whereas the look-out of the Žitavská ulice-street (left) after World War Two heavily did suffer from the reconstruction and demolishion of several houses the present Kolárova ulice (right) retained its look which it got after the great conflagration of 1820.
This picture postcard shows the houses of the Mlýnská ulice street under the market place. Most of the houses shown are yet standing, only the second house to the right had been demolished in the 2nd half of the 20th century.
On this picture postcard the old road to Jablonné near of the bridge over the Boberský potok brook is shown. Almost all the houses shown were later demolished, at present remains only the two-storeyed house at the right corner. In the background there is the Zelený vrch hill.
This picture postcard shows the bridge built 1845-1846 over the Boberský potok-brook on the old street leading to Jablonné, from the near-by swimming-pool it got its name „Baderbrücke“ (in German: Bader = bathkeeper).

This picture postcard shows the houses standing along of the Boberský potok brook between the new housing estate and the houses in the street Žitavská ulice. The weawing mill in the background, built in 1884 by Gustav Niessner, became one of the first victim of the Depression and had been demolished already in 1934 but its smaller building survived to present days.

Church

On this picture postcard from the 30s of the 20th century we see the church St. Elisabeth surrounded by the town park founded in 1907 on the place of the former cemetery.
This postcard from the end of the 19th century shows the church St. Elisabeth at Cvikov surrounded by the park established on the place of the old cemetery which had been closed in 1890.

On this postcard from 1925 there is the church St. Elisabeth at Cvikov. The tower was added to the church later and it is told that it had been constructed of sandstone blocks quarried at the nearby Dutý kámen-ridge.
This picture postcard shows the interior of the St. Elisabeth-church approximately in the first half of the 20th century.

Important buildings

This picture postcard shows the primary and lower secondary school of Cvikov with the adjacent park as seen from the tower of the church St. Elizabeth. On the left side we see the houses of the Čechova ulice street which at present immediately at the school is crossed by the newly built bypass road.
On this picture postcard from the years before World War One you see the monumental building of the primary and lower secondary schools. The motorcar before it possibly belongs to the then parish priest Bensch who used it to drive into the neighbouring villages where he held religious classes.
This picture postcard from the years around World War Two shows the building of the former hotel „Zur Stadt Rumburg“ at the Komenského street. In most hotels then it was possible to hire a car - in this house to this purpose served two cars „Tatra“.
On this picture postcard the new building of the district court built in 1927 at the then Röhrsdorfer Strasse is shown. Today it almost unchanged is used by the savings bank.
This picture postcard shows the attractively built villas in the street at present called Nerudova-street. Whereas the more distant Niessner's villa between 1983 and 1893 had been reconstructed and adapted for a community centre, the second villa in the foreground had to wait for its reconstruction till 2005, as is documented by the lower foto from that year.
On this picture postcard from the beginning of the 20th Century the restaurant „Zur Böhmischen Nordbahn“ standing in the neigbourhood of the now cancelled railway station at the road to Sloup is shown. At present the house is the seat of the Children´s and Youth´s centre Cvikováček.
This picture postcard shows the former restaurant „Zur Woberbach“ standing on the corner of the streets Žitavská ulice and Ústavní ulice across the street of the later built monumental hotel „Reichshof“ (now called „Sever“). At present these houses does no more exist.

On this picture postcard from the years before World War One shows Heinrich and Fanni Stolle posing in front of their house in the Pivovarská ulice (the former C. F. Balle-street) below the market-place.
On this picture postcard there is the former restaurant „Zur Sonne“ (Sun), No. 169 in the street now named Kollárova ulice. For several years before World War Two it belonged to the family Weikert and some years after the war there was the restaurant „U Sadílků“. The lower fotograf of the house is from 2003.
On this picture postcard the upper picture shows the railway station opened in September 1886. The lower picture shows the former Kostelní ulice (=Church lane).
This picture postcard shows the railway-station of Cvikov with the newly built outer roof at the platform. On the other pictures there is a overall view of the town from the Zelený vrch and the southwestern corner of the market place with the old town-hall.
This picture postcard shows one of the pavillons of the former pulmonary hospital founded 1905 by Dr. Horner below the Calvary hill as one part of the hospital. The house is standing till now but later reconstructions significantly altered its appearance.

On this picture postcard from the 30s of the 20th century there are the buildings of the then general and pulmonary hospital on the margin of the town below the Calvary hill. The hospital, which originated 1879 from the former town hospital thanks to the then burgermeister J. F. Knobloch, served till the end of World War Two. In 1996, a community care service was opened in it.
This picture postcard shows some places in the parklike area of the former provincial pulmonary sanatory below the Calvary hill near of Cvikov.
On this picture postcard from 1912 we see the grounds of the former Emperor Francis Joseph-Jubilee-Hospital with the Calvary-hill in the background.

On this picture from 1932 the newly-built house of the then enlarged paediatric sanatorium at the foot of the Křížový vrch (Calvary) is shown.
This picture postcard shows the new building constructed in the 30s of the 20th century in the area of the sanatory under the Křížový vrch (Calvary).
On this picture postcard from 1917 there is the municipal brewery built in 1867 on the road leading to Jablonné. The Hoffman's-pond shown in the foreground was used as swimming-pool with boat-hiring and was liquidated at about 1938.
This picture postcard shows the mechanic weawing mill of Josef Niessner in the outskirts of Cvikov. Until the outbreak of the economic crisis this factory employed about 900 workers and 560 home workers. During the war it was converted to war production and after 1945 it served to the polygraphic production of the Grafostroj company.
This picture postcard shows the once famous restaurant „Fichtelschänke“ which stood on the lower end of Cvikov at the road to Lindava.
On this picture postcard from the beginning of the 20th century Anton Würfel's restaurant and two more pictures from the popular excursion resort Františkovo údolí under the Calvary-hill are shown.
This miniature water mill was one of the group of attractions in the valley formerly called Franzensgrund, a popular excursion resort of the inhabitants of Cvikov. At present this place is part of the children´s sanatory below the Calvary hill.

Ponds

On this picture postcard you see the Brewer´s pond (also called Badeteich = Bathing pool) in the years in which it had not yet a concurrence by the Hoffmann pond built several years before World War One.
This picture postcard documents the Brewer's pond under the Zelený vrch-hill, which already before the end of the 19th century had been used as bathing-pond.
On this picture postcard the second swimming-pool of Cvikov on Hoffmann's pond below the Zelený vrch-hill is shown. The pond had been closed already before World War Two and at present its only reminiscence is the old wooden cabin.
